Roof Underlayment

Scenario: Water gets under your metal roof or shingles, finds its way to one of the nails holding your shingles, seeps through your plywood sheathing, and slowly waterboards you in your sleep…

Doesn’t that sound like fun? No.

That is why it’s important that you apply roof paper on top of your sheathing. And because a tiny house roof is so small, you should probably just buy the good stuff!

We bit the bullet and purchased some Grace Ice & Water Shield roofing underlayment. You might only need one package as it covers 225sqft, we needed two…

Here are some of the advantages of using this product:

  • Self adhesive: So you don’t need fasteners when installing it.
  • Rubberized: So when you nail in your roofing, the underlayment actually seals itself back around the nail.
  • Ice damn readyWikipedia will explain that one better.
  • Integrated ripcord: So you can peel off one half of the backing, stick it in place and peel the rest.

And here are some instructions:

Build Tip:

Work safely on the roof. If you can, build yourself a scaffolding next to your roof, you will be much happier. Consider also using a harness for steep roofs. Our crew is a bunch of rock climbers and/or altruistic nutjobs… Do as we say, not as we do! Besides, we end up doing a bunch of weird (and slightly uncomfortable) yoga poses.
