Vina’s Tiny House & Tiny Documentary

Today I went back to Ojai for the Ojai Film Festival to enjoy the documentary TINY: A Story About Living Small.

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/28422870]

The movie is a great source of inspiration and information about building a tiny house and this growing movement. It shows how Chris and Merete face challenges with building their home, changing their lifestyles, and all the amazing rewards they are getting out of it.

You’ll also hear comments from one of the most famous tiny housers out there: Jay Shafer (founder of Tumbleweed Tiny Houses and Four Lights Tiny House), Dee Williams (founder of Portland Alternative Dwellings), Derek “Deek” Diedricksen (from Relaxshack’s Tiny House Hub) and many others. Check them out on Facebook too and go see the film!

This was a great opportunity to meet Vina again and check out her tiny house in more depth.

We first met Vina at the Ojai Green Home & Building Tour where she was showcasing her tiny house. For whatever reason though, I didn’t take any pictures of her home back at the event so here are plenty to make up for it!

Love this house. How well does it move though? I’m concerned about construction and not having it shake apart if it’s moved from one place to another…

That is a very good question Amy. I can’t speak for Vina’s house but I’m sure she’d be fine. She’s probably not going to move it around too much though.
If you stay in touch with our Tiny House Giant Journey project though, you’ll find out. We plan on starting to travel early February and we’ll see if our house makes it around the corner!
If you get high quality plans, you’ll see that they require plenty of metal strapping, holddowns, hurricane ties in strategic places. Tumbleweed houses are now being built in a way that allows them to be RV insurable, so you can assume they will stay together on the road.
Your main concern is probably gas mileage! Those things are heavy and not aerodynamic.

I just wanted to throw in my experience having driven mine (a modified Fencl) from Colorado to Alaska on some of the worst roads I’ve ever seen – these houses do fine, just fine. As long as you use screws, and lots of them. And of course as long as the roof is properly braced. Three and a half thousand miles and nothing but our possessions were out of place!

Yep, they should hold up pretty well! Thanks for the input Nathan. It gives us hope, we’ll make it a few miles!

I’m REALLY interested to know the brand names of some of the parts used: toilet, windows, hardware for ladder . . . are these included in her book? Or can you tell us?
