DIY Shed to Tiny Home Project: How One Family of Six Built Their Dream Tiny Home

Welcome to the Hollands’  DIY shed house — a cozy, custom-built home that proves living small can be both beautiful and functional. After relocating from Texas to South Carolina, the Hollands found themselves struggling to find a home that fit their needs. With limited rental options and high housing costs, they decided to take a unique route:  converting a 16×48 shed into a full-time family home.

The family of six — Natalie, her husband, and their four kids (ages 18 months to 11 years) — embraced the challenge head-on. Inspired by Natalie’s mom, who first suggested the idea, they realized that building a shed home offered them flexibility, customization, and long-term value. Unlike renting or buying an RV, they could tailor the space to their lifestyle and potentially recoup their investment if they ever decided to sell.

Turning a shed into a home 

They purchased a shed shell and spent two months transforming it into a fully functioning home. Jordan, Natalie’s husband, did nearly all the interior work himself — from framing to electrical — working 12 to 16 hours a day. The total cost of this DIY Shed to Tiny Home Project? Around $68,000, excluding exterior features. With smart shopping and DIY labor, they saved thousands on appliances and materials by sourcing items from online marketplaces.

The outdoor space is just as thoughtful as the inside. A simple deck built from recycled pallets serves as an outdoor hangout and play area. All essential systems — plumbing, HVAC, and electric — were installed underneath the shed’s skids, making the entire home easily movable without major disassembly.

Inside, the layout is both clever and comfortable. A cozy entryway leads into a bright dining area with built-in storage benches. The spacious kitchen — the heart of the home — features full-sized appliances, butcher block countertops, and a walk-in pantry that doubles as a room divider.

Open living space with vaulted ceilings  

The living room is designed for connection, with a sectional couch and custom built-ins for books, toys, and homeschooling supplies. Natural light pours in through large windows, and raised ceilings (up to 11.5 feet) make the space feel even larger.

Upstairs, the boys share a loft space that’s part fort, part bedroom. It’s their own world filled with Legos and floor beds, where they feel cozy and independent. Downstairs, the main bedroom, family closet, and one thoughtfully designed bathroom keep everything streamlined.

Living mortgage-free has been a game changer for the Hollands. Not only has it allowed them financial freedom, but it’s also brought them closer together as a family. In a world of constant comparison, they’ve found contentment in their tiny, intentional lifestyle.

Their shed home isn’t just a temporary solution — it’s a testament to creativity, resilience, and redefining what home can be.
