In the heart of Sun Valley, Idaho, a teacher and librarian couple embarked on a mission: to generate extra income in an increasingly expensive area without giving up the home they loved. What began as a backyard investment turned into a custom-built tiny house adventure—complete with legal drama, design ingenuity, and a happy ending nestled among the redwoods.

A Dream Derailed—Then Reimagined

Originally intended to be their full time home in their back yard while renting out their main house for extra income, the tiny home faced unexpected resistance. A long-forgotten HOA emerged, backed by neighbors threatening lawsuits. Despite 13 years of peaceful living in the area, the couple discovered a legal gray zone when it came to tiny homes on wheels. While Idaho had recently passed laws making tiny houses legal, the law wasn’t entirely clear for tiny houses on wheels, and the dream of keeping it local faded fast.

But they weren’t ready to give up. Instead, they relocated their tiny home to the redwoods of Northern California—a place that embraced their vision and offered the added bonus of scenic serenity.

Smart Design with Heart and Purpose

The 32-foot long, 8.5-foot wide, 14-foot high tiny home is a marvel of efficient design. Built by Big Wood Tiny Homes, the layout was drawn up on graph paper by the owners themselves. Every square foot has a purpose.

Instead of a traditional oven, they opted for an air fryer to save space and energy. The sink features customizable accessories like a breadboard and colander. Storage is creatively handled with deep pull-out drawers, custom cubbies, and—perhaps most notably—baskets everywhere. These allow guests to unpack or simply tuck their luggage underneath, providing both flexibility and order.

The tiny home is also thoughtful in its accessibility. With one partner living with rheumatoid arthritis, it was essential to have a main-floor bedroom. While a loft offers additional sleeping space, the main bedroom allows for full standing height and easy access—something many tiny homes lack.

Rustic Meets Modern Comfort

The home embraces a rustic aesthetic without veering into “log cabin” territory. Cedar paneling in the loft contrasts beautifully with the drywall below, and a large skylight provides natural light and nighttime stargazing. The bathroom balances style and practicality with a laminate shower wall—lighter and more durable for mobile living than traditional tile.

Every detail was chosen with intention: barn doors crafted from leftover siding, custom-sized windows for maximum light, and even a rotating TV that can face multiple areas depending on where the family gathers.

Built for Now—and Later

This isn’t just a vacation rental; it’s a future retirement haven. With only 11 years left until retirement, the couple envisions winters spent skiing in the mountains with the tiny home in tow. For now, though, it serves as both a getaway and a source of supplemental income.
