Handcrafted Tiny Home Retreat Built on Vancouver Island

 

On Vancouver Island, tucked between towering cedars near Victoria, BC, stands a small but stunning work of art — a hand-built 18-foot tiny home that perfectly blends craftsmanship, creativity, and connection to nature. Designed and built by Lance, with the occasional supervision of his dog, Buddha, this cozy home is more than a living space — it’s a reflection of self-expression and simplicity.

Built from Vision, Not Blueprints

Lance didn’t start with formal plans or construction experience — only passion and persistence. With the help of YouTube tutorials and pure determination, he built his third tiny home from the ground up in just eight months. Every problem became an opportunity to innovate. “I don’t really have blueprints,” Lance explains. “Everything is in my mind. I just solve problems as they come up.”

Professionals handled the plumbing and electrical work, but everything else — from framing to finish — was done by Lance himself. His artistic touch is visible in every detail, especially in his use of natural cedar contrasted with matte black steel, giving the home a warm, modern, forest-inspired aesthetic.

A Home in Harmony with Nature

This 150-square-foot home sits gracefully on cedar supports cut from the same land it rests on. Elevated above the forest floor, it offers breathtaking views of the trees and sunlight filtering through the canopy.

Outside, a gravity-defying cedar bench rests atop two boulders — a clever and artistic outdoor feature that appears to float in place. The deck serves as an open-air living room where Lance enjoys morning coffee or evening dinners under the trees.

 Compact Comfort Indoors

Step inside, and you’re greeted by clever design and warmth. The bedroom area features a large window that overlooks the forest — Lance’s “nature alarm clock,” as he calls it — letting in morning sunlight and birdsong.

The kitchen is compact yet highly functional, featuring:

• A five-foot countertop with a convection oven and hotplate
• A full-size fridge and freezer
• Smart storage tucked beneath the counter and stairs

For heating, Lance went the extra mile with radiant heated floors, all controlled by a smart thermostat he can manage from his phone. “It’s small, but I’m not wanting for anything,” he says proudly.

The bathroom includes a full flush toilet with an external holding tank and a stand-up shower — a rarity in such a compact home. A handcrafted cedar-and-mirror sliding door completes the cozy, spa-like feel.

The Detached Living Room & Queen-Size Swing

What makes this build truly unique is the outdoor extension — a detached living room designed for yoga, entertaining guests, or simply relaxing. This 120-square-foot addition creates a secondary space that expands the home’s livable area without compromising intimacy.

Nearby hangs one of Lance’s favorite creations: a queen-sized cedar swing suspended by a clever winch system. It’s both a statement piece and a sanctuary for rest. “If I’m ever feeling stuck, I just come out here to reset,” he says, swaying beneath the trees as hummingbirds zip by his feeders.

Living Small, Dreaming Big

For Lance, tiny home living is about freedom, creativity, and closeness to nature. “Being in this home reminds me what’s good for my heart and soul,” he reflects. Though he plans to sell this build soon and begin a new project, each creation tells his story — one of passion, problem-solving, and the beauty of simplicity.
