In the tranquil embrace of the redwoods, the River Otter tiny home stands as a tribute to family, creativity, and purposeful living. Built by partners Demetra and Noa after the passing of Noa’s brother, who left behind 38 plots of land, this home is part of a bigger dream: creating a tiny house village. That dream began with research, heartache, and a whole lot of vision—and what they created is nothing short of extraordinary.

A Home Born of Intention and Purpose

Before choosing River Otter, the couple stayed in 12 different tiny homes to learn what worked, what didn’t, and which features truly elevated small space living. When they found this model from Escape for $130,000—with all the right details and an all-electric setup—they took the leap. Their experience, combined with the design vision of builder Josh and a deep connection to the surrounding nature, shaped this light-filled, welcoming home.

Building a Tiny House With Heart and Purpose

At 30 feet long, 9 feet wide, and 13.5 feet tall (the legal max), River Otter was designed to feel anything but claustrophobic. Huge windows flood the space with natural light and offer framed views of redwood trees and a nearby creek. Orientation of the home was carefully chosen to take full advantage of the scenery. Even a beloved plant, once marked for removal, was saved as part of the home’s outdoor charm.

The wraparound deck, designed by their son and built with a local craftsman, adds significant outdoor living space. Rain or shine, it’s a cozy extension of the home, complete with herb gardens, shoe storage benches, and a grill—plus complimentary slippers for guests in this shoes-off household.

Smart Kitchen and Functional Living

Inside, River Otter boasts a surprisingly spacious kitchen with a full-sized fridge and oven, two-burner stove, dishwasher, and smart wall-mounted storage for knives and cutting boards. Though a trash can location posed a minor challenge, the rest of the kitchen offers excellent utility.

The dining table, on rollers with two extendable leaves, can be easily rearranged for larger gatherings. A sofa in the living room converts into a bed, making the space suitable for up to six guests, though four is more comfortable. The living area also features a fireplace that adds warmth or just cozy ambiance, along with thoughtful cubbies for knitting, books, and family essentials.

A Loft Like No Other

The loft space is a major highlight. Unlike most tiny home lofts, this one allows for full standing height—at least for those 5 feet tall and under—and connects to the bedroom side via a catwalk. The bed platform includes under-mattress airflow to prevent mold, while a mini-split provides heating, cooling, and dehumidifying. Loft windows open to views of sunrise and redwoods, making mornings feel like waking in a treehouse.

Art, Story, and Staying Grounded

Artwork throughout the home, including a waterfall-themed shower curtain made from Noa’s photography, and a painting by their daughter-in-law, ties the River Otter home back to the local landscape and their family’s creativity.
