A Tiny Home Born from Lava and Vision
Set on the raw, ever-changing lava fields of Hawaii, the Phoenix House is a one-of-a-kind off-grid tiny home that blends sustainability, spirituality, and striking design into an unforgettable retreat.
The Phoenix House isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an experience shaped by transformation. Built on a 1990s lava flow on Hawaii’s Big Island, this off-grid tiny home reflects the powerful natural forces that surround it. Caretaker Jade describes the land as both intense and magical, a place where creation and destruction coexist in real time.

What makes this home truly special is its origin story. Jade’s journey from New York City to Hawaii was driven by a desire for spiritual growth. After a vivid dream led her to the lava fields, she knew she had found home. Over the past 15 years, she has cultivated not just a dwelling, but a sanctuary for connection, reflection, and renewal.
Designed for Transformation
The Phoenix House was designed with intention by builder Will (Artistry Homes), who envisioned it as a space where guests could undergo their own personal transformation. Inspired by the volcanic landscape, the home embodies the idea of rebirth.

This theme is carried throughout the property, most notably in the custom Phoenix mural in the lofted sleeping area. The imagery symbolizes rising, renewal, and new beginnings; an experience the creators hope every guest feels during their stay.
Sustainable and 100% Off-Grid Living
One of the most impressive aspects of the Phoenix House is its fully off-grid design. Every system has been thoughtfully implemented to minimize environmental impact while maintaining comfort.
The home runs entirely on solar power, supported by battery storage and a backup generator for cloudy days. Water is collected through a 5,000-gallon rain catchment system, then purified using advanced filtration. Even the hot water system runs on propane, ensuring reliability in a remote setting.

This commitment to sustainability extends beyond utilities. Much of the home was built using reclaimed and recycled materials, including large commercial-grade glass windows sourced for free. This not only reduces waste but adds unique character to the space.
Embracing the Beauty of Imperfection
Rather than resisting the harsh volcanic environment, the Phoenix House embraces it. The design incorporates the concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection and natural aging).
Materials were chosen with the understanding that the elements would leave their mark. Over time, the lava landscape, weather, and air will create a natural patina, enhancing the home’s aesthetic rather than detracting from it. A striking red metal accent running through the structure mimics flowing magma, tying the home visually to its surroundings.
Compact Living, Expansive Feel

Despite its small footprint, the Phoenix House feels surprisingly spacious. Oversized custom windows flood the interior with natural light and offer uninterrupted views of the lava fields and distant volcano.
The open layout seamlessly combines living, dining, and kitchen areas, creating a functional and inviting space. The kitchen, though compact, is fully equipped with essentials including a full-size fridge, propane stove, and purified water system.
The bathroom is equally impressive for a tiny home, featuring a large rainfall shower and modern amenities. Upstairs, the lofted bedroom provides a cozy yet airy retreat, complete with a queen-sized bed and panoramic views.

A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Power
What truly sets the Phoenix House apart is its location. Positioned near one of the world’s most active volcanoes, guests are immersed in a landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
From the property, you can watch the ever-changing sky, experience dramatic sunsets, and reflect on the raw beauty of newly formed land. Jade describes life here as a constant reminder of how fleeting and precious everything is, a perspective that deeply resonates with visitors.
More Than a Stay—An Experience
The Phoenix House is not just a tiny home. It’s a retreat designed to reconnect people with nature, themselves, and the present moment. Whether it’s playing a ukulele at sunset, gazing at the volcano, or simply enjoying the quiet, every detail encourages mindfulness and appreciation.
For those seeking something beyond a typical getaway, the Phoenix House offers a rare opportunity to experience life on the edge of creation; where the earth is still being formed, and transformation is part of everyday life.
