At just 19 years old, Derek Espinosa made a bold move by trading a cramped $1,500-a-month Portland apartment for something smaller, smarter, and entirely his own. His 250-square-foot tiny house on wheels isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s a home filled with color, community, and a deeply personal story.

A Home With a Heart and a History

Derek’s tiny house isn’t just a financial win; it’s a deeply personal one. After losing his mother to cancer shortly after he turned 18, he received $40,000 in life insurance money. Rather than spending it impulsively, Derek saved it and eventually found his house listed on Craigslist in Oregon City for $26,000.

“This is really a gift from her,” he says. “It’s not just four walls to me. It’s not just a tiny house. It’s an extension of her.”

A tapestry his mother gave him for Christmas hangs prominently in the loft, and each morning he greets the space with a quiet “good morning, mom.” It’s a reminder that the best homes aren’t measured in square footage, they’re measured in meaning.

Built Smart: Form Meets Function

Sitting on a dual-axle trailer, the house stretches 22 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and 13.5 feet tall. But it’s the interior design that’s really impressive.

Derek embraces the tiny house rule that every element should serve at least two purposes. His bed doubles as a massive storage unit, with pull-open compartments running the full length underneath. He also built his own staircase from scratch for just $45 worth of lumber from Home Depot. For him this was a major upgrade from the precarious climbing blocks that came with the house originally.

Three lofts (more than most tiny homes have) provide sleeping, lounging, and dedicated storage space. The kitchen defies expectations too, featuring a full-size refrigerator, a three-burner stove, and a pantry stocked and ready for a household of three.

Speaking of three, Derek doesn’t live alone. He shares the 250-square-foot space with two roommates as well as a cat named Saturn and a dog named Penny. Rather than feeling crowded, Derek sees it as a feature.

“When you’re in such a cozy space, it’s just easier to talk,” he says.

With costs split three ways, each person pays just $250 a month including utilities. That’s a remarkable number for Portland, and it’s freed Derek up financially in ways his old apartment never could.

Color, Creativity, and Personal Expression

Step inside and the first thing you notice is the color. Derek has repainted the interior multiple times, treating the house as a canvas that evolves as he does. Eleven windows flood the space with natural light, and stained glass mosaics in the windows cast rainbows across the walls on sunny days.

A mannequin named Jackie (found at a West Hollywood thrift store ) stands dressed in rotating outfits that mirror Derek’s own wardrobe. A tiny shopping cart holds his dog Penny’s toys. Vintage Furbies line the shelves alongside cherished mementos, including a stuffed dog named Daisy Dill Pickles from his childhood.

The bathroom, humorously dubbed “the Shrek Cave,” features an aluminum-sided shower and a composting toilet that makes relocating the house dramatically simpler since there is no sewage hookup required.

The Bigger Picture of Going Tiny

Derek has moved his house four times, and while he admits it’s “drastically inconvenient every time,” he wouldn’t trade the lifestyle. For him, tiny living has unlocked financial freedom, a richer social life, and the creative space to keep reinventing himself — and his home.

“I think something really cool about going tiny is that you get to live big,” he says. “I’m here forever for sure.”
